Betta Fish: Profile, Guides and More

If you are out here looking for information on betta fish, you are most likely referring to the betta splendens, a species belonging to the genus betta. This particular species is the most prevalent in the aquarium hobby and are often bred in Thailand before being shipped out to pet stores. They are endemic to Thailand and they have been bred for the hobby for approximately a millennium which makes it one of the longest domesticated fish in the world.

Due to their relatively low maintenance, bright colours and the fact that they are happy to be alone the betta has turned out to be one of the most popular fish in the hobby. This of course is both a blessing and a curse.

I say it is a blessing since the bettas in their natural habitat are currently listed as vulnerable by the IUCN (International Union for Conservation of Nature) mainly due to habitat destruction while at the same time the species has found itself spread across the globe. At the same time it is also a curse because there is a false notion that this beautiful fish can live and thrive in just about any condition which often leads to neglect and cramped living conditions.

This page which serves as the hub to all things betta aims to present all sorts of guides - care tips, personality traits, breeding, tank mates, diseases and more.
